What Options Did the Argument Leave Out?
Either-or claims become easier to test when you separate the offered choice from the practical options left out.

Introduction
Either-or claims become persuasive when they narrow your attention before you evaluate the evidence. Instead of asking whether the argument is true, you start choosing between the two options that have been presented. A key way to detect a false dilemma is to stop treating the offered choice as complete and ask a simpler question: what practical options have been left out? Critical-thinking guides consistently note that false dilemmas work by presenting only two possibilities when additional alternatives, intermediate positions, or combinations are available. Spotting missing middle options is not about proving that a compromise is correct. It is about checking whether the argument has justified excluding other reasonable possibilities. If it has not, the conclusion may be much weaker than it first appears. [Wikipedia]WikipediaFalse dilemmaFalse dilemma
What Is the Forced Choice?
The first step is to identify exactly what choice the argument claims you must make.
Many false dilemmas use obvious signals such as “either”, “only two options”, “with us or against us”, or “you must choose”. Others are subtler. They may present one option as desirable and the other as disastrous, creating the impression that no other route exists. Logic and writing resources describe this pattern as reducing a complex issue to an artificially limited set of alternatives. When you encounter an either-or claim, rewrite it in a simple form:
- Option A
- Option B
- Therefore choose A (or B)
For example:
Either we ban cars or we destroy the environment.
Once written this way, the hidden assumption becomes visible: the speaker is assuming that the two options exhaust all realistic possibilities. Yet cleaner technology, public transport improvements, urban redesign, car-sharing, or targeted restrictions may also exist. [Purdue OWL]owl.purdue.eduOWLLogical FallaciesPurdue OWLLogical Fallacies - Purdue OWLEither/or: This is a conclusion that oversimplifies the argument by reducing it to only two sides…
The goal at this stage is not to evaluate the options. It is to identify the claim that these are the only options.
List Plausible Missing Options
After identifying the forced choice, generate alternatives before deciding whether the argument succeeds.
A common mistake is to search only for a midpoint between the two stated positions. In reality, the missing option may not be a compromise at all. It could be a hybrid solution, a conditional approach, a staged decision, or a completely different framing of the problem. Researchers and critical-thinking texts note that false dilemmas often exclude viable alternatives rather than merely excluding a mathematical middle point. [Wikipedia]WikipediaPurdue UniversityPurdue UniversityPurdue University is a public land-grant research university in West Lafayette, Indiana, United States, and the flags…
Useful prompts include:
- Can both stated goals be pursued at the same time?
- Can the issue be addressed gradually rather than all at once?
- Are there partial versions of either option?
- Is there a third option that changes the terms of the debate?
- Can the decision be postponed until more evidence is available?
Consider these examples:
Either-Or ClaimPossible Missing OptionsEither support the policy or accept chaosAmend the policy, pilot it, replace it with a different policy, or address the underlying problem differentlyEither protect privacy or maintain securityUse targeted warrants, oversight mechanisms, narrower surveillance powers, or improved investigative methodsEither attend university immediately or fail in lifeApprenticeships, vocational training, employment, delayed study, part-time education
The important question is not whether every alternative is equally good. The question is whether the argument has demonstrated that they are impossible or irrelevant. If not, the choice set may be incomplete. Look for Hidden Spectrums
Many false dilemmas arise because a spectrum is presented as though it contains only two endpoints.
Critical-thinking resources frequently describe false dilemmas as “black-and-white” thinking because they ignore degrees and gradations between extremes. [Excelsior OWL]owl.excelsior.eduOWLFalse Dilemma FallacyExcelsior OWLFalse Dilemma Fallacy - Excelsior OWLSometimes called the “either-or” fallacy, a false dilemma is a logical fallacy that pre…
A useful test is to ask whether the issue naturally varies by amount, intensity, frequency, or scale.
Examples include:
- Regulation versus no regulation
- Spending versus no spending
- Freedom versus control
- Risk versus safety
In practice, these issues usually involve many positions along a continuum. A city can reduce traffic without banning cars. A government can increase regulation in one area while reducing it in another. An organisation can improve security without maximising surveillance.
When a topic naturally exists on a spectrum, the absence of intermediate positions is often a warning sign that relevant options have been omitted. [Purdue OWL]owl.purdue.eduOWLLogical FallaciesPurdue OWLLogical Fallacies - Purdue OWLEither/or: This is a conclusion that oversimplifies the argument by reducing it to only two sides…
Test Whether the Conclusion Still Follows
Once plausible alternatives have been identified, return to the original conclusion.
Ask:
- Does the conclusion still follow if one additional option exists?
- Has the speaker explained why the omitted options fail?
- Is the conclusion necessary, or merely preferred?
Many false dilemmas gain their force from eliminating alternatives before the reasoning begins. If a credible third option survives scrutiny, the claim that one of the original two choices is unavoidable becomes much harder to defend. The weakness lies not necessarily in the logical structure itself but in the assumption that the listed options are exhaustive. [The Writing Center]writingcenter.unc.eduThe Writing CenterFallacies - The Writing Center - UNCDefinition: In false dichotomy, the arguer sets up the situation so it looks like t…
For example:
Either we approve this proposal today or the project fails.
The conclusion appears compelling only if those are truly the only possibilities. If revision, delay, partial approval, or a different proposal remain available, the sense of inevitability disappears.
The key insight is that the burden of proof belongs to the person limiting the options. They must show that the alternatives have been considered and reasonably excluded.
A Quick Three-Step Check
When confronted with an either-or claim, use this sequence:
- Name the forced choice. What two options are being presented as exhaustive?
- Generate missing possibilities. Look for hybrids, spectrums, sequences, conditional paths, or reframings.
- Retest the conclusion. If any plausible alternative remains, ask whether the conclusion is still unavoidable.
This method shifts attention from the attractiveness of the offered options to the completeness of the choice set itself. Because false dilemmas often persuade by hiding alternatives before evidence is discussed, simply making those alternatives visible is often enough to expose the gap in the argument.
