One reason mental-health claims are difficult to prove is that school rules govern only part of a young person’s day. Even a strict policy affects perhaps six or seven hours, while most phone use occurs outside school.

A major 2025 study of English secondary schools found that restrictive phone policies were associated with lower smartphone and social-media use during school hours, but there was no evidence that the policies reduced overall phone use or improved mental wellbeing. This finding highlights an important reasoning error. If excessive phone use contributes to poor wellbeing, it does not follow that restricting access during lessons will necessarily reduce total exposure enough to change mental-health outcomes. Many public discussions treat phone bans as though they have already been proven to improve mental health. The evidence is not that settled.

The strongest recent school-based studies generally compare pupils attending schools with different phone policies. These studies can show whether students in restrictive environments report better wellbeing, lower anxiety or improved sleep than students elsewhere. So far, the results have been modest or absent rather than dramatic. Why Sleep and Anxiety Claims Need Extra Caution

Sleep and anxiety are frequently cited when advocates argue for stricter phone rules. Yet the evidence linking school restrictions specifically to improvements in these outcomes remains limited.

The central problem is timing. Many concerns about sleep involve late-night device use, notifications, social-media engagement and disrupted bedtime routines. Restricting phones between morning registration and afternoon dismissal does not directly address those behaviours. Therefore, it would be unsurprising if a school-day restriction produced little measurable change in sleep quality. A common fallacy is therefore:

  • Premise: heavy phone use is associated with poorer wellbeing.
  • Observation: a school restricts phone access during the day.
  • Conclusion: the restriction improves wellbeing.

The conclusion does not necessarily follow. Additional evidence is needed to show that the intervention changes the outcome being claimed.

When Mental-Health Benefits Are Reported

The picture is not entirely one-sided. Some newer studies suggest that wellbeing effects may emerge over longer periods or under particular implementation models.

Large-scale American research on schools using lockable phone pouches found dramatic reductions in classroom phone use. However, early effects on wellbeing were mixed, with some evidence of an initial decline in student wellbeing and increased disciplinary problems before later adaptation. Why Careful Wording Matters

The wellbeing argument for phone restrictions is not necessarily wrong. The problem arises when advocates overstate what the evidence proves.

Statements such as “phone-free schools improve mental health” imply a level of certainty that current research does not provide. A more accurate formulation would be that restrictive policies reduce access to phones during the school day, may help address classroom distraction, and could contribute to wider wellbeing strategies, but have not yet been shown to produce broad, consistent improvements in adolescent wellbeing, sleep or anxiety on their own.
