Arguments that rely on unnamed experts occupy a difficult position in critical thinking. The conclusion being promoted may be true, and the speaker may even have consulted genuine specialists. The problem is that readers are asked to trust a source they cannot examine. Phrases such as “experts say”, “scientists believe”, or “researchers have found” often provide the appearance of authority without the information needed to evaluate whether that authority is relevant, qualified, or accurately represented. Why Unnamed Sources Weaken Expert Appeals
An appeal to authority becomes stronger when readers can investigate the authority being cited. When names, qualifications, publications, or institutional affiliations are supplied, it becomes possible to assess expertise and compare the claim against other evidence.
